Sony 28-135mm lens 95mm ND filter?

Iv'e purchased the Sony 28-135mm f4 lens a while ago to use on my A7s and really enjoying this combo but I need ND of course, now this is a 95mm thread.

Does anyone use this lens with a screw on ND filter with the hood? and if so what are you using.

My options are Matte Box with ND filters or I see that Bower make something but the reviews…. well, not great.
Tiffen also make a 95mm 1.2 ND, 4 stop. I wonder if this would fit with the lens hood.

Any feedback would be great.

I use a cavision 95mm-82mm step down ring. It opens up a larger selection of filters and it doesn't vignette with one or two filters attached. I recommend kenko's ndx variable nd filter combined with a regular Hoya Nd (iso 3200 is a tough nut to crack in broad daylight). Make sure your filters are multi coated and that they filter out infrared light. Otherwise your colors will be all over the place, particularly when using large amounts of ND filtration. YMMV.

Thanks Louis,

I'm wondering about the 95-82 step down ring, won't this be visible at the wide end of the lens?

Nope. With 2 thick filters you get a very small hint at the edges at 28mm in 4:3 photos. In video mode you can go 3 filters deep. (Why would you though?)

You can even reattach the lens hood with filters. I just leave the step down ring on all the time with a 82mm pinch cap.

I've uploaded some pictures for you to look at.

Thanks for the advice Luis, this looks like a great solution. How have you found the kenko's ndx variable nd filter?

Cheers,
Simon

It's the only Variable ND I would ever use, period.

I don't know how the physics of their "depolarizing plate" works, but it's the only one I don't have to worry about colored specular highlights, flat lookin skin, color casts at different densities and/or weird reflection patterns with.

It's not 100% perfect, but it brought me back to Variable ND after I swore never to use one again and giving away my Tiffen years ago.

I wish they were less expensive and had more sizes available though. ;)

Yes, I was thinking of adding two Tiffen NDs and staying away from the variable NDs. I don't shoot Slog so during the day I might get away with one ND filter.

Why not use ISO 100 or 200?
It works for me, so does higher shutter speed and or less gain.

Re: Sony 28-135mm lens 95mm ND filter?

I need to revive this thread because I got a Sigma 150-600mm for my GH4 and need to find a 95mm variable ND to fit it. Has anyone had any experience with the Bower 95mm? Would a Tiffen 85mm and a step down ring be a better bet for this lens? Your suggestions are appreciated!

Hi Mark,

This is what I did on the Sony 28-135mm. I've since sold the lens though.

Reviving this old thread...
With the Sony 28-135 on A7Sii is this all I need to get ND and still use the stock Lens hood?
