Sony FDR-AX 100 autofocus

I have a Sony AX-100 I use as a backup camera. I shoot weddings I had a camera fail on me saturday and had to use it as a main. great camera but it was really slow on the autofocus to the point that in my haste I may have something setup wrong, does this camera have a slow auto focus? or does it have trouble in darker situations? or is there a setting I should check out? Its set on "spot" now I dont like not having manual control over gain and iris which is what id have to do in order to get it in "face detection" mode.
