Full camera specs including this info is available online. Sometimes Google is your friend.

No, Google is not my friend and neither Sony. On Internet it is impossible to know it and on Sony site I read: 9,3 - 111,6 mm are equvalent to 29-348mm. I think it is impossible that 12x are 348mm. It is too much. Maybe they consider also the electronic zoom? For this reason I'm asking that question.

Here's a page from my upcoming Z90 training video. The AX100, NX80, AX700, and Z150 all use lenses with the same specifications.

Re: Sony AX100: 9,3 - 111,6 mm lens. Focal length (equivalent to 35 mm)?
If I"m guessing right you want to know how the ax100 focal length translates to the focal length of your gh5 lenses?
Like Doug has shown and what also is available on the spec list link you provided show that the ax100 has a f=29.0-348.0 mm (16:9) 35mm equivalent focal length. If you want to know how that translates to your gh5 you need to divide those numbers by 2 so to cover the same focal length as the ax100 has on your gh5 you need a lens that can go from 14,5mm to 174mm. The only lens that I know of that comes close to this is the 14-140mm from panasonic, if you then would use the ETC mode from the GH5 you could about get the same reach, depending ofcourse if you shoot HD or 4K. |

Take a mm or two off when using Active SteadyShot.

Does it matter to most people? I just zoom in or out to what I require on the screen. Total amateur.

Yes, it matters a lot. Saying a lens has a "12x optical zoom" means absolutely nothing without knowing the numbers behind it.

Back in the old days of video cameras, when all of them were roughly 40mm wide angle, the 12x or 14x was just basically a telephoto identifier.

What kind of video camera are you talking about? On a 2/3 Betacam the focal length had to be less than 8mm to even be considered close to wide angle. On consumer camera, even less than that. Even on on a modern full frame DSLR 40mm is not wide.

I am talking about those old shoulder home video VHS camcorders, or similarly large 8mm "Handycams".

And you're saying that 40mm was wide? I find that hard to believe with such small sensor/film sizes.
