Shutgun mic clamp diameter too large?
I just received a Shure VP82 shotgun mic that when placed in the microphone clamp is loose enough to slide back and forth. The diameter of the mic is 22mm which seems to be the same as other popular mics like the Rode NTG2 (22mm seems like the standard size right?). The clamp itself doesn't seem damaged or having any issues fully closing as far as I can see.
Do I need to get some sort of spacers or o rings to attach the mic, or do I just have to use the supplied shock mount provided with the mic on the camera cold shoe mount? Thanks |

Re: Shutgun mic clamp diameter too large?
Your mic clamp probably goes on with two screws. You can remove it and order other sizes from B&H. There does seem to be a standard nowadays, but it always seems like whatever mic (or camera) I order, I always need a different one.
I have also wrapped gaff tape around the handle of the mic to make it bigger. Depends on your budget. ;-) |

Ahem...it's a shotgun I think! ;-)
This comes up all the time. Just buy some 'O' rings from your local DIY store of suitable diameter and that'll get you up an running.

Even easier, use some electrical tape around the mic body to make it wider.

Tape the mic barrel or if you have an old bicycle inner tube laying around cut a small piece and use that but tape is faster easier, cheaper and adjustable.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I ended up ordering these o rings .
I'll report back with the fit when they arrive, and since I'll have more than I'll ever need, share them. ;-) |

Re: Shutgun mic clamp diameter too large?
Sony's microphone clamp diameter dates back to the Betacam days, when the short on camera included shotguns were like 25mm thick. Sony sells a spacer that comes with most of their mics as a part for $11.

The rubber tube washers are available on ebay:

Re: Shutgun mic clamp diameter too large?
I bought a sheet of Sorbothane and use a piece of that wrapped around the mic. It's slightly sticky and tends to stay in place and it's made to absorb vibrations.

Re: Shutgun mic clamp diameter too large?
The o-rings were a bust: the inner diameter was a a bit too large to get a good grip, and the outer diameter still didn't increase the size enough for a tight fit.

Re: Shutgun mic clamp diameter too large?
Just use electrical tape or gaff tape. It's super cheap and effective. Seriously, I've used cameras on nationally-broadcast sporting events that have used e-tape to mount microphones.

Re: Shutgun mic clamp diameter too large?
Go to The Home Depot and pick up some rubber O rings (Take your Mic along for fitting). Put them on your microphone and it'll fit just fine, with the added benefit of a little isolation.
