FDR-AX100 footage

I've been struggling with the 4K footage from this camera, I know I can record smaller files that would create proxy files yeah? or I could down rez in something like media encoder or Movie Studio (which appears faster)
What workflow is best dealing with this higher resolution. All of my final output is either DVD or HD.

Re: FDR-AX100 footage

Rob, Vegas Pro (or studio) works really well with 4K, I am using Pro 13 which generates proxy files automatically which allows smooth editing at various playback resolutions.

For the ax100 footage I like to use the sony levels filter to extend the pixel range down into the blacks as the AX100 does not go below about 7. Studio is almost as good as pro but does not have the Pro scopes to help manage colour correction.

Re: FDR-AX100 footage

hi Andy thanks for that, yeah Studio which comes free with the AX100 seems to whiz along, I generally use Premiere Pro as my editor but it was going pretty slow with the bigger files.

Might take a look at Vegas too seeing I now have two 4K cams

I've no problem with AX100 4K running smoothly with Premiere Pro. Are you using the Mercury Playback Engine with a CUDA video card?

Re: FDR-AX100 footage

hey Charles, yeah think I sorted it out, had the clips on a secondary (slow) drive moved them and they're scrubbing through good enough.

On another note, I tried rendering out a 'movie' from Sony Movie Studio Platinum 13 the total was 31 minutes and the exporter gave estimates as follows for a 1920x1080 file;
WMV - 09:00:09
MP4 - 20:11:42
AVCHD - 02:50:00
Twenty hours to render MP4 1920x1080 with a file size of 2.73 Gb! I don't know if the HD would have any effect on it, I doubt it.

I'd hate to be doing a 60/70 minute edit with that.
