bug - a short short with a lot of effects
hello all,
this is my first time posting. I hope you all like this piece. it was created as my thesis for school. the short duration is mainly due to the amount of time it took for the effects. the link is to the online production diary with articles on how each shot was made where there's a link to the final piece at the top. http://11thdimension.com/bug/bug.html also, here's the link to my production site where I do this kind of stuff for fun. http://11thdimension.com/ aside from bug, theres only one other project thats currently under production. _grant |

great looking, but oh, that bug in the ear theme....blech!
i kinda thought when he threw up that the bug juice was gonna get flushed and then re-constitute in someone else's drain, to continue the hideous cycle of evil... |

Great effects! What program did you use?
In the scene with the toilet, did you flush the toilet, and then replace the water with that black stuff in post, or did you add the black stuff from scratch in post? Ernesto. |

Incredible.
Had a Chris Cunningham / Aphex Twin vibe...but dare I say it, better. Edit: had i watched the credits I would have noticed it is Aphex Twin afterall! |

sorry to everyone for the late response. It's nice to read all the positive feedback!
to answer a few questions: the bug was modeled, textured, animated, and rendered in Cinema 4D. the liquid was done in Realflow and brought into C4D to render. compositing was mostly done in After Effects, a little bit in Shake as well. matchmoving was done with PFHoe (highly recomended), although a lot of the shots were static frames with primary and secondary camera movement added in After Effects (like where the oil moves around violently and the bug on the pillow). the fake snow is Particular, a 3d volumetric particle plugin for After Effects made by Trapcode. the smoke and other fire effects are done with Maya fluids. all color grading was done in After Effects using layering, blending modes, filters, and masks. I started out with Magic Bullet, but decided to do it manually for more control and to give a more stylized result. however, the principles are the same, just done manually. as for the oil in the toilet, I painted out the water and used a still for the plate. Thanks again for the nice comments! |

Your 3D and compositing work is very impressive. I enjoyed the visual style too. It encourages me to watch work by talented filmmakers such as yourself for my own work.
