Re: Canon XF300 - as new
Hi Andy,
My experience of selling video camera gear second hand has been that you never get what you think the gear is worth. It's unfortunate, but that's the way it goes. If it was £5000 new, even if it was just used for a while and put in a box for 5 months, you'll still need to drop at least £1000 off the price. After 1 year, I managed to get £1000 for a £2200 camera. A £4000 camera kit I had for 2 years got me £2000. A £1600 tripod got me £500 after 2 years, and people say tripods hold their value! It stinks, and it hurts! But it's just the way things are. People will generally need to see a serious reduction to take a chance in buying second hand from a random bloke on the internet. (I know, I have been that random bloke a few times). I'm not knocking your reasoning, it just appears to me as if you are asking a bit too much for the camera, which is why it hasn't sold. If you aren't prepared to drop the price, you'll have a long wait for a buyer. Sorry if it seems like I'm trying to teach a granny how to suck eggs! I genuinely wish you best of luck in selling the camera. Have you tried contacting any of the dealers to see about selling it? Maybe getting part exchange for some other new kit? H Preston, ProAV and CVP will all buy second hand pro equipment. |

Re: Canon XF300 - as new
Andy, Mike is right on target, and forgetting the numbers for a moment, your camera is an in demand model, so if it's not selling or you're not getting offers, bottom line the price is too high, regardless of how perfect it is.
I have a brand new camera I would sell to upgrade to a bigger camera, but I cannot because I would get killed on the loss, and I refuse to do that with my limited budget. Best of luck to you, it's tough to get what you want for gear, as Mike points out.

Re: Canon XF300 - as new
Thanks guys. I think you are both spot on and I probably am asking too much. As all my gear has been a sort of investment/potential future income rather than just purely for please I think the hit on selling it is too much given that I really don't want to have to sell it. I kind of think I might be better off keeping it (it's an awesome camera at the end of the day) and finding another way to fund a DSLR set-up. My ultimate aim is to try and make some money offering a high quality photo and video package to adventure holiday type companies for promotional use. Obviously I need a DSLR as well as my XF300 and XF100. It's tough trying to predict possible future income and then trying to fund the required gear on that basis.
Basically looking hard at it it doesn't make financial sense to sell my best equipment and take a big hit at this point. Anyway thanks for the helpful comments. Andy S |
