Re: Ikan's New Featherweight 3-Point Spot Light Kit
Humm strange that they call it a spot light kit, since its is a multi-LED soft light setup with highly reflective shadow casting barn-doors. Spot light traditionally refers to a Fresnel fixture with controllable "spot/flood focusing " capabilities.
Maybe they mean quick to setup, (Johnny on the spot) since they come ready to run off of DC power. good price point for the kit. |

Re: Ikan's New Featherweight 3-Point Spot Light Kit
They are indicating that they are using narrow beamwidth LEDs on the panel. That doesn't mean that it is a narrow focused light overall. What that does mean is it will have a bit more throw and a sharper falloff to the side than a panel using wider beamwidth LEDs.

Re: Ikan's New Featherweight 3-Point Spot Light Kit
In video lighting, spot light has a significantly different implication than in staging - for video when I want a "spot light" I want a narrow beam from my instrument, whether an LED panel or a focusable open face (like an Ianiro Redhead) or a fresnel fixture. In theatrical, a spot light would be something more like an ellipsoidal (Leko) or a fresnel. A follow spot is something else entirely.

Re: Ikan's New Featherweight 3-Point Spot Light Kit
Shaun, I would go further to suggest that the term "spot light" has no definitive meaning in the film/video world. As you indicated a fresnel or open face will allow for a certain amount of focusing, i.e. racking from flood to spot, but that doesn't make it a "spot light". The only way I would use that term is to describe an effect, such as when shooting a speaker at a podium or a performer on a stage; we might say we are looking to put them into a spotlight, and we would then determine if we needed a full-on follow spot or could recreate it with a Leko.
In any event, I would assume that the name of this instrument, while confusing, refers to a light kit made up of narrow LED's (so, "spot" + "light kit" rather than "spot light kit"). Actually to me the worse part is including "3 point" in the title, because that simply propagates propagates the way-outdated concept of putting identical instruments on either side of the camera and behind the subject and calling it lit.

Re: Ikan's New Featherweight 3-Point Spot Light Kit
I looked at the specs for the light fixtures on Ican's website. They don't uniformly list this info across all the products which makes it harder to pick out.
For the IFD576-S the beam width on the LEDs is listed as 60 degrees. IFD576: 576 Featherweight Daylight LED Light | ikan SPECIFICATIONS: Operating Volts: 12-24V Dimensions: 13.5 x 8.5 x 2.75" Weight : 5 lbs (2.26 kg) Brightness: 3' / 5602 lux (±100K) / 5600K (±100K) Color Temperature: 5600K (± 100K) Shipping Weight: 7 lbs (3.17 kg) Dimensions (Metric): 34.29 x 21.59 x 6.98 cm Beam Angle: 60° Operating Wattage at 120V/60Hz: 46watts Foot Candles : 520.6 For the IFD576-SP the beam width on the LEDs is listed as 30 degrees. IFD576-SP: 576 Featherweight Daylight Spot LED Light | ikan Features Ultra-Light Compact and Easy Set-up LCD Touch-Screen Controller and Dimmer Knob Includes Pro Battery Plate for Sony V-Mount or Anton Bauer 30 degree bulbs allow for tighter beam. This is what they are referring to when they say this new fixture is "spot". It will offer a bit more reach and have a sharper falloff but is nothing like a Fresnel or a follow spot.

You might consider buying these: Thermoplastic ABS housing LED1024 Light dimmable bi-color dimmer touch control | eBay
Same price, same build, double the LEDs and Bi-Colour. AFAIK Stephen Studio is a direct outlet for Kinosun (whos site seems to be down now). I've bought 3x 312 BiColour LEDs from them in the past and they are amazing (they are also rebadged by Ikan and doubled the price!) I contacted Stephen Studio directly in the end, emailed steven.fu.chin at gmail dot com and got a better deal than via Ebay.

Re: Ikan's New Featherweight 3-Point Spot Light Kit
I have a question -
I am replacing my old Britek 300 / 600 watt lamps and was wondering if the light output is similar? (Thinking of getting the IKan 576 one) Thanks! |
