flash advice

I'm primarily a videographer who's recently explored DSLR video.

More frequently people are asking me for high quality photos as well. I use a Canon 60D with various lenses and I'd like to add an external flash to my kit now.

There are some sales on right now and I'm eying up a Canon Speedlite 430EX II and I'd appreciate some feedback or advice as to whether this is a decent flash for someone more or less at the prosumer level.

I want to limit my spending to $300-$350.

Are there good quality third party brands that would be also be a good buy?
