Panasonic scene files HPX171

Hi!

I own a HPX171 now for about 6 months and having shoot lots of video I never got around to using custom scene files. So this got me thinking about scene files in general - how they work. What I don't understand is why use scene files at all? Isn't it better to get as neutral image as possible and then edit it in post - and to get as much latitude as possible?

If anybody knows some good literature on this topic would you be kind enough to reference it to me?

Thanks!

One of the reasons someone may choose to use scene files is to compensate for some specific sooting condition. The stock scene files for instance address certain things like low light, fluorescent light, etc.

Other possible reasons might be compensate for shooting a TV monitor, or provide compatible frame rates and shutter speeds to the end user.

Others may use them to prouduce footage that more closely matches another camera. This is definitely one that may be done in post.

I was thinking more in the lines of scene files that produce a specific visual effect. I know why to use scene files but this just got me thinking - why would one shoot let's say with a black and white scene file (all logistical situations aside)? This is a post process within the camera is it? Or is there a difference?
