Rode VideoMicro mic for GH5?
Hi, I'd like to buy a good mic for my GH5 but it has to be small like Rode VideoMicro. I'm not used to managing a camera to shoot videos and for this reason I like a small mic. But Rode VideoMicro is very cheap and I don't know if it will be useful because the GH5 has a fairly good internal microphone. In your opinion could Rode VideoMicro to give a better audio quality?
Then .... I have just noticed it is powered by the internal battery of GH5. Will be it a problem? Some suggestions please? Thanks

Re: Rode VideoMicro mic for GH5?
More or less any Rode VideoMic will sound far better than the internal microphone on a GH5, which is really only good for maybe sound-sync with an external field recorder. Also, those Rode mics tend to be powered by 9-volt batteries so do not impact battery life of your camera.
That said, unless you have a very, very controlled and simple setup (quiet, acoustically-ideal room) where you are doing something like recording a talking head documentary, the the Rode mic is unlikely to give you a professional result fit for commercial use. If you're not intending to sell the video you are making, it may be good enough for personal, hobbyist use. Cheers. |

Edit: Let me rephraze my comment a bit, a shotgun mike on camera is for me the worst possible solution to record good sound unless I"m standing less then a meter from the subject, the only way to get good sound is to get as close as you can to your subject and for run and gun I prefer to use a recorder with a lav on whoever I need to get good sound from. The GH5 internal audio is not bad at all for a dslr to record ambient sound or to pick up voices, unless you are shooting in windy conditions, it's clear enough to be used if you have no other option, much worse are the g85 and the gx85 which have almost unusable internal audio.
