GH2 vs Sony NEX-5N

"This is a short test in low light against the hacked GH2.

The GH2 is set to 1080/24p AVCHD 44Mbit with Auto Quantizer 4. The NEX 5N is set to 1080/25p AVCHD 24Mbit. "

BTW the Nex-5N has the same sensor as the new Sony VG20 camcorder.

Re: GH2 vs Sony NEX-5N

Sony seems to have a yellow cast, GH2 has more contrast. I think the GH2 has protected its throne =)

Re: GH2 vs Sony NEX-5N

I agree.
While the 5n seemed brighter, the gh2 seemed to have a more pleasing picture.
Cool comparisons, though. Thanks for showing.

Thanks for posting. I like the brighter gamma from the Sony. It is easier to add contrast in post than take it out if it is baked in. They both have a nice image. Does the GH2 have more video friendly controls?

Re: GH2 vs Sony NEX-5N

I love almost everything about my little GH-2, but I'd take that Sony gamma curve any day of the week.
It's disappointing that every picture profile for the GH-2 crushes the darks so bad especially since there's nothing inherent in the camera that dictates that they do this, they just chose to do it for some unknown reason.

I agree... I love my GH-2, but I'd take the low light capability shown in that video any day. Much more flexibility in post.

Re: GH2 vs Sony NEX-5N

The reason I wouldn't want the Sony is it aliases worse than the 7d in 720p mode, I owned a 7d and that aliasing was awful in 720. Also, if you get the EVF, the price is higher than GH2.

In the GH2, use Smooth film setting for better shadow detail. Cinema film setting works great in controlled lighting, but crushes the blacks to much in "hard" lighting such as the sun. Smooth or Nostalgic are you best bets for low light conditons.

Re: GH2 vs Sony NEX-5N

Hey guys, anyone know of any videos with samples of gh2 using different settings? I'd be keen to see such a thing if it's out there.

Re: GH2 vs Sony NEX-5N

Thanks for sharing this comparison!

I'd be up for the brighter gamma too - only feature (along with hacked higher-bitrates to keep the image clean) I'd ask for.

I've been out of the DVInfo & GH2/GH1 loop for a while - has there been any talk about custom-made (hacked) picture profiles?

Re: GH2 vs Sony NEX-5N

To my knowledge, no, no one has come up with any cool profiles. However the hack is proceeding with leaps and bounds. There's 175 mb/sec hack right now that is amazing. You get discreet frames with it. It renders motion like a $60,000 cine cam.

Re: GH2 vs Sony NEX-5N

Will a hacked GH2 improve the highlight fall off and limited tonal gradation as depicted in the review? Surprised that the Sony beats the 7d for stills quality.
