GH1 17 Mb versus HDV tape quality
Hello,
Has somebody actually compared the quality of the GH1 full HD video and full HD on HDV tape? Let's say with the HV20 series from Canon or a Panasonic. Rob |

As a pure codec issue, the GH1's codec is not as good as HDV. In situations where the codec is not stressed, the GH1 looks fabulous, but if you stress the codec, the GH1 will show artifacting sooner than HDV will.
This is not typical of h.264; for example, the 13mbps of AVCHD in an HMC40 will hold up better than 25mbps of HDV. But the GH1 uses a limited version of AVCHD that isn't as robust, so its 17mbps isn't as good as 25mbps of MPEG-2. |
