Final Cut Pro 4 and the DVX100

I read today that FCP 4 was announced, and it mentions the DVX100 specifically when talking about its new 24p support:

This is exciting!

I have a shiny-new Panasonic DVX100, but have not been able to get iMovie to recognize it when I plug in via FireWire. Does anyone have any success importing video from the Panasonic to any of the Apple NLE programs?

Just solved my own problem (with help from the Apple folks) and can now share the solution.
If I first connect my Panasonic via FireWire and have a tape in and playing, THEN launch iMovie, the software recognizes the camera and I can import video fine. Who'd have thought?
