Disabling the PV-DV953's power saving mode

Is it possible to prevent the camera from nodding off when it is not recording?

Unfortunately, no. It will stay powered up if a tape is not threaded, but if it has a tape in it, it will shutdown to protect the heads and tape. This is not a battery saving feature because it will stay on and run the battery to exhaustion if a tape is not in the camera.
