cam warranty & extended warranties
From what I've read, Sony and other major players only validate the warranty with their cams when purchased new in your name from an official dealer with a cash register receipt. These companies offer a flat-rate repair of around $500 for their video cams. For this reason, no serious videographer is without their warranty.
Can you get a warranty on a used camera? How would an extended warranty work? What's this Mack warranty vs Squaretrade? I'm stuck with either buying a used Sony HC1 from eBay or a new Canon HV20 locally and need to know all this up front. Links and recommendations appreciated No surprises... |

Maybe the pros are busy...ha
I'll update this with more info. Seems these other warranties like Squaretrade and Mack are kind of warehouse repairs...They repair all kinds whereas the Sony warranty of course goes right to the Sony specialists. Buying new cams on eBay voids Sony's warranty. Sellers may open the box, take out some stuff, add some things they can't get rid of like lenses and fluff, then offer it as a package. This still voids the warranty. I purchased my HC5 via mail order from an authorized dealer and got a great price. Then, I wandered over to a Sony Style store and picked up the 4 year extended warranty which covers all parts and labor starting right now for $109...Yes...I'm a very happy camper. |
