How Should I Be Storing Files?

Let me give you a rundown of my current situation.

-I am currently editing video on final cut pro
-iMac with a 1TB HD.
-I have two separate 2TB external HDs (one for Time Machine one for for photos)
-Shared drive with a ton of space

I have filled up my computers HD rather quickly and apparently don't know what I'm doing in regards to storing video. I'd like to be able to store all my video on my shared drive or on my external, but I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Currently my iMac says that 936GB of my 1TB are used by "OTHER" and only 148GB are used by "MOVIES."

I obviously need some help storing my files. When you import them to your NLE, is there a way to have them saved elsewhere other than your HD? How does that work exactly? How do you do it?
