discussing the dvinfo 2012 gear roundup

Where is the correct forum to discuss the gear roundup on the main page? There's a link to discuss it on the forums, but no hint where.

Re: discussing the dvinfo 2012 gear roundup

Groovy!

Here are the points that come to mind:

First off, great list. I saw some new stuff there that really piqued my interest. That said...

1. The z180 looks very sexy. I started to buy 4 until i saw the price. Since the z96 streets for around $70, i assumed the z180 would be around $150, possibly 200 because it is new. But it is $370. I agree that it is much nicer to snap together without the vertical adapters and the "talk to each other" thing is nifty too... but for being twice the brightness of the z96, it is what, 5x the price, even for the 5600k model - which doesn't benefit from the "dial all the linked units to the same color temp" feature (which is nifty, btw). For the same price, having 5 z96 would seem to be FAR more useful than having 1 z180. (i have 4 z96 and use the heck out of them. I'd never opt for half the brightness and lose the ability to place 4 different lights. Are other people really excited about the z180 at this price? I mean, are you jumping at them at $370? Without a crazy bargain like the z96 i could see getting excited, but i mean... the z96 exist and are insanely good and cheap!

2. the "high hat" and "skateboard" functions of the myt slider seem kinda dicey. Has anyone field tested them and found the single "high hat" height to be useful? Same with the skateboard function. I have a "skate dolly" knockoff that works great on smooth surfaces... but almost never gets used, as few directors ever call for shots on kitchen counters or pool tables. Has the myt version proved useful? Or, is the slider function good enough that its worth the price for the 1-in-1 function?

3. digital recorder pouch looks killer. Gotta get one of those. Cheers.

4. The airbox looks like an "almost" product. Mighty dear at $54, and the eggshell doesn't seem to fit very well from the photos. Any hints what the "revision" to them might be?

5. Sachtler Ace looks killer! How did I miss that one? The equivalent vinten is the blue, isnt it? which is closer to $2300.

Thats my feedback to the article. I'm also gonna give the rotolights a look. I've seen various similar products for awhile now. As soon as one hits the color rendering of the z96, i'm there! hehe.

cheers,
-a
