Makeup, is it needed ??
Other than the occaisional shiny head, do todays cameras and NLE's take care of color correction. I remember the days when peoples faces looked alien before going on camera. I imagine this was for several reasons, proper skin tone, shiny etc. If you were shooting a commercial would you use makeup ? ask the client to wash their face etc ? I wouldn't think skin tones to be a problem today.

For a commercial, always. it also evens out the skin tones, which can vary across the face.
You don't need to over do it, but HD does show up every imperfection and make up artists now air spray rather than use powder. |

Re: Makeup, is it needed ??
Thanks Brian, sounds like it is more about perfection than anything, is this a must even with no close ups ? Thanks again.

It depends on what the shots are, but commercials tend towards perfection anyway.
Good make up is subtle and shouldn't draw attention to itself. Unfortunately. face highlights on video tend to to be noticeable out to at least meduim shots. |

Re: Makeup, is it needed ??
When budget allows, include a makeup artist in the crew. It not only makes your talent look better, but gives you added cache as a full-service provider. When budget is low, keep a mini-makeup kit handy with disposable sponge applicators, 3 or 4 shades of mineral powder (in compacts), and some concealers. When your talent is a bit 'bleary eyed', and you can reduce the bags, you'll be a hero for the day. It's not just about shine control anymore. This works for men as well as women. You might get some initial skepticism, but when you explain that it makes them look 'alert and refreshed', they will no doubt be grateful for your thoughtfulness.
