It would be projection contrast, which causes problems during telecine, even with the modern projection stocks.

Beautiful. Thanks for posting. I wondered about the women, who are probably long gone by now, but the blog post fills this in nicely. A fantastic glimpse of the past and probably the most interesting test clip on youtube.
