Getting Vid/Audio off a DVD - Not what you guys think!
Hey everyone,
I have a client whose had footage shot for him by someone else. This person has then given him the footage as a DVD "My DVD" and not a data disc where you could just pull the video off the disc. Now I can manage to get the Video by copying the .VOB file and changing it .MPG but I cant get the audio which is really something I need. I go into the AUDIO_TS folder and nothing appears there. But in the VIDEO_TS I have these files: VTS_01_1.IFO VTS_01_1.BUP VTS_01_1.VOB (The file which I converted to MPG) VIDEO_TS.BUP VIDEO_TS.IFO VIDEO_TD.VOB I am on an iMac using FCP. Cheers Sam |

Product - DVDxDV: rip DVD video to Quicktime, for Final Cut Pro, Avid, iMovie, iDVD, iPod, iPhone, and Apple TV
Since you have permission, this will work fine, I have used it for years. It will NOT defeat CSS, Macrovision or Copy Guard so it can only be used on burned non-commercial DVDs anyway. |

Also MacTheRipper and Handbrake work very well. Handbrake you can choose file type you save as where as MacTheRipper rips the dvd structure so you'll end with the same thing you did only with audio.

I just did this with about a dozen client DVD's.
Use mpeg streamclip which is free. The audio_ts folder will always be empty on a DVD. The audio is muxed (multiplexed) in with the video as part of making the DVD. you have to "de-mux" the files to split them apart. drag all the VTS_.VOB files into streamclip and it will ask you if you want to open as a DVD. say yes. then under the file menu, choose your format and save.

A day late and a dollar short but another vote for MPEG StreamClip.
For what it's worth, I keep a copy of Mac the Ripper around as well for the handful of things that MPEG SC doesn't do well. Again, completely legit - NORMALLY for ripping DVD archives of multicam live switched conventions.
