Device Control not working right. Please Help

I decided to mess around with premiere 6.5 and my camcorder (Canon Optura) earlier and at startup "Device Control" is the last thing to load and it now takes awhile before Premiere is fully loaded (it hands on device control for a minute or so). Then it freezes up when I select "Movie Capture" and then again when I go to select "DV/IEEE 1394" as the capture format. Sometimes it says "Unable to connect to capture driver".

This is strange, because everytime I turn the camera on and off it is detected and it gives me th option to click on Premiere 6.5. The camcorder and the firewire seem to be working until I get to Premiere.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled the program several times and it doesn't help. The plugs are all secure too.

If someone could help me I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks A lot, Corey

PS: I'm running an Athlon XP2000+, 256MB DDR memory, 40GB 7200RPM hard drive, 32mb ATI All In Wonder 128 Graphics Card & a Soundblaster Audigy sound card w/firewire. Didn't have any problems like this before. The hard drive is newere than my previous one and my computer has been running much smoother too.

Corey,

I had a similar problem with Ulead HDV plug-in capture. I could capture with the JVC HDV capture, but not Ulead. Talked to Ulead, re-installed, etc. Finally got it to work by uninstalling camera driver, then re-installing it AFTER Ulead capture pgm was installed. This should not have been necessary, but it worked!

Ok, I uninstalled my Canon DV driver, but how do I resintall it? I never actually installed a driver in the first place, so how do i get it to detect again?

Thanks, Corey

Win XP automatically detects what source (manufacturer and model) through firewire when the device is plugged in. In theory it should install them as soon as you plug the camera in again. You might need to reboot the machine. Or scan for plug and play devices. Make sure your camera is turned on.

Another tip is to make sure that your camera is turned on before you open premiere, otherwise it won't always detect that a camera is attached.

Hope this helps a little,
