The "Bonanza" look at DVinfo.net

I'm trying to re-create the effect that started every series of Bonanza. You remember the one where the center of the map burns out and reveals video behind it?

I've got the shots I need but don't understand the matte process well enough to make it work.

Any suggestions on how to make this work?
