Deciding between...
Hey everyone, I am starting to save up for a camera and have a choice. My friend has suggested looking into either a Canon XL-1s
or the Panasonic DVX100. I've checked out both and am now on the fence on what to decide. I am really leaning towards the XL-1 though. Does anyone own the DVX100 or have used one? Is there anyone here that owns BOTH cameras? (I know there is a lot of you that have XL-1s) Thanks for any help, Chris

What things do you want your camera to do? This will affect which camera is better for you.
Also, what's your budget? The Canon camera's interchangeable lens feature is really only useful when you pay for nicer lenses and probably the nicer viewfinder. If you're shooting independent films, you might not want to spend too much on the camera if you can't get decent sound gear or lighting equipment. The last thing to consider is some of the other cameras out there, like the DVC80 (DVX100 minus certain features like cinegamma, 24p shooting, and other stuff you may not need). I don't have either camera but if you provide more detail you'll get better advice. |

Aye! Thanks Glenn.
I am going to be attending LA Film School and I wanted my own camera to start learning on my own. My friend suggessted those 2 cameras (but with more emphasis on the XL1s) so I could start getting a feel for mini35 because of the interchangable lenses the XL1s offers. So I really am looking for a camera that I can use to start gaining experience with filmmaking really. I am new to this and am trying to learn as much as I can from different websites, etc. Chris

If using real, manual, interchangeable lenses is your top most priority, the XL1S stands alone in this price range, and it's the only reason I can think of to get this camera. Otherwise, the DVX has a very good manual lens, and the most image control features of this price catgegory.
