Standby or turn off

Need some opinions:
Seems like there are 1000 opinions on this one. Should you or should you not put your computer on "Standby"? And why or why not? Some say yes, some say no. I would be interested in hearing all opinions.

Can't speak for PCs, but we are told Macs under OS X need to sort their wee brains out with their daily, weekly and monthly cron tasks. If they are used intensively all the time then shut down (and never left on "idle") you are supposed to need to run the maintenance scripts manually.
