filming "stock footage" in urban setting

I consider filming some stock footage in urban settings (Chicago) and I was wondering what kind of permits etc. must I have (I assume I will have to have one). I have liablity insurance for my comapny. Any advice would be greately appreciated.
DO I NEED any permits etc. to film in public place???

Best place is to check with City Hall, Film commission if the city has one (most likely does).
