Nab

Greetings, I have been a commercial still photographer for more than 25 years and used to do video, mainly for fun. I am looking to get back into video and have a couple of cameras in mind. However, this close to NAB 2008, would it be advantageous to wait and see what is coming out this year. Thanks.

Hey Jerry,

NAB is a great place to see what is out and what ***might*** be forthcoming. I guess the old rule is if you need a camera now go ahead and buy what you know will serve your needs for a price you can (barely) afford. If you want to wait, you can wait for years as there is always something new on the horizon.

IMO, there are a lot of excellent cameras out right now.
Any new camera that suddenly surfaces at NAB that can blow them all out of the water and still be affordable in April 2008 would be a real shocker.

Take for example the RED camera and the Sony EX1. Both are trend setting, but might not be even close to what you need or might be well out of your price range.

I mostly agree with Jerry, with this exception: Sometimes the newest releases from NAB will give a nice price drop on the older models. So, even if you aren't getting the newest, baddest, camera from NAB, you mat still see an advantage in waiting.

Of course, if you need it now--go for it. If you can wait, then I would.

And if the US economy keeps orbiting the drain in a downward spiral (Michigan has been in the one state recession now for seven YEARS) you might see some real good show deals at NAB.
