Using a TiVo Series 2 Digital Video Recorder as a video storage device.

Hi guys. I'm a college student in Alabama. My filmmaking professor is trying to figure out if you can use a TiVo as merely a video storage device, instead of using it for it's intended purpose. He doesn't want to pay the monthly fee, because he has no plans to actually record any television.

He simply wants to shoot footage on a camcorder, and dump that footage for digital storage into the TiVo. Can this be done, and how?
