Adjusting overlay gamma for Avid/VirtualDub etc.

My display is much too bright - easy to see when playing SMPTE bars. I updated the display driver, yet still overlay adjustments affect only media player, not Avid Xpress (4.2) or VirtualDub.
I know, PC monitors do not and are not meant to display video right, but I am doing CC on my laptop for now - hopefully in a couple of weeks I'll have access to a proper analog SMPTE set-up.
In the meantime, there must be a way to control this...?!

Thanks,
Drew
