Laptop NLE Performance at DVinfo.net

I wanted to have the ability to go poratable when not with the table monster so I got a Gateway 600 XL laptop using XP Pro, 512 RAM, 2.2 P4, Firewire I/O and a 5400 RPM drive. I installed a Premiere 6.0 trial and have been able to cut a little bit just fine. However, when I chose mulitple clips, in this case 7 about a minute each, to drop into the source window it immediately laid out each clip in its own window and then froze up. At first I didn't wait any length of time after to see if it recovered on its own because I didn't think it should be doing this. It showed Premiere as NOT RESPONDING and I couldn't even End Task it was so overwhelmed, bless its CPU. After a couple of other duplicated attempts and leaving it alone after another End Task step, it finally, slo....wly closed each open window with a vertical wipe. Do you reckon this is because it's a trial version or that a single processor just can't handle these types of multilple tasks? I can't imagine trying to render out several layers in a project. Whadaya think?

This has nothing to do with:

- it being a trial
- you only having one CPU

I'm guessing it is either your harddisk or XP. I have a DELL
900 mhz laptop with 512 mb ram and am running Premiere 6.01
without any problems on this. It also has a 5400 rpm drive.
The major difference is that I have Windows 2000 Professional.

Oh, one thing that just entered my mind is: do you have the
camera connected and switched on when you work in Premiere?
If so it will send images over firewire to your camera. If I have
this enabled Premiere slows down very much. If you have this
also, try not connecting the camera to see what happens.

Hi Rob. No, I preloaded the video and then disconnected the deck. I am not loading through Premiere right now. The unit came with a consumer version of Pinnacle software so I just load through it and then import from the folder. Adobe told me that trial versions are not always reliable and may not function properly and are not supported. I am going to get the 6.5 full version but was just playing around with this first. Another issue is that when any rendering is completed the monitor windows suddenly snap out of place and shift an inch or two. It's as simple as moving them back, but it doesn't snap out of place on my desktop. When I get 6.5 I'll just see if this is fixed and update this thread. Thanks for the input.

Another tip would be to wipe the drive and then reload your software. By doing this get whatever stuff Pinnacle put in the registry.

XP Pro can be more stable, but I feel just fine sticking with Win2K. It has a few less enhancements than XP has.
