firewire card recomendation at DVinfo.net

hi,
i need a new firewire card for my PC, and was hoping you guys could recomend some. i will use it only for capturing video from cameras and i will capture video with avid xpress. which card do you think would work best?

also, does the firewire card need power from the power source just to capture video from the computer? since the camera doesnt need power from the firewire?

Hi Matt,

Any OHCI compliant firewire card should do the job. The firewire card takes its power from the PCI bus on the motherboard.

Is this what you are after, or are you talking about the MOJO?

The Avid site has recommended specs and they say they only support certain firewire cards.

I believe all of them work, although if you want to play it safe maybe stick with those cards. I honestly don't know enough about Avid to say whether the firewire card might make a difference. Generally speaking, they are all practically the same.

Websites to check for buying a firewire card:
pricewatch.com / resellerratings.com
pricewatch for prices, resellerratings to check how decent the retailer is. On a small purchase (~$25) like this, you may not need to bother with resellerratings.com
pricegrabber.com (price grabbing service)
newegg.com (if you don't want to waste time)

This was back in February of 2004 so things may have changed since, but Douglas Spotted Eagle posted the following regarding testing of OHCI cards...

"The orange should work fine. However, during our beta tests for a
different purpose 2 years ago, ONLY SIIG, Unibrain, and ADS met all
IEEE1394 OHCI compliancy specs at a 100% level. that's changed now,
but for me personally, I only trust these 3 brands. Personally, I like
ADS, but that's because they have really awesome people working there.
And they are kinda the kings of 1394 products."
