Simple answer... not really, at least not yet. Theoretically you could have multiple CPUs and have multiple processes going on at the same time, and there it would possibly be useful (but unlikely to be too helpful given disk thrashing).
When Windows XP 64 or Mac OSX 10.4 or any of the other 64 bit optimized OSs are out (and assuming you have the relevant 64 bit hardware), there may be an advantage then, but chances are it'll be slight. Computers may allow X about of memory to be installed, but there's still limitations in the software (current versions of XP in particular) in terms of how much contiguous memory can be used (I don't remember exactly, it's like 1.5 or 2gb per process, etc). If you're at 2gb, you'll be fine. More mem beyond that won't hurt you, but don't have high expectations for added performance :) |
