Can't recommend editing software unless you state what sort of computer you're using... do you have a Mac, or a PC?

Hi Aaron,

This subject has appeared many times. Please try our search ^

Here are the ones you need to be looking at:

1. Microsoft Movie maker
advantage - It comes free with Windows XP
disadvantage - can not do many effects

2. Avid Free DV
Advantage - Its the same interface as the full version. So if you decide to upgrade in the future you would be pretty familar with it. Its also free
Disadvantage - The Avid interface and the way things are done, could be a little tricky for beginners.

3. Adobe Premiere Elements
Advantage - Quite cheap, and can do quite a few things. Could later on upgrade to Premiere Pro.
Disadvantage - Can't do everything the full version can.

4. Pinnacle Studio
Advantage - Quite cheap is to use interface
Disadvantage - Some versions were extremely buggy (Not to sure if they have managed to rectified this yet....)

5. Vegas
Advantage - Some people like the interface and the way you do things in Vegas. Audio editing is also pretty good.
Disadvantage - A bit more expensive than ones already mentioned.

6. Premiere Pro
Advantage - Good intergration with other adobe software. Can be run with hardware accelerator cards
Disadvantage - Need a machine that meets the recommened system specs. Is more epensive than the first 4 already mentioned

7. Pinnacle Editions
Advantage - Can do quite a lot
Disadvantage - The interface is not to everybodies liking

8. Avid DV express
Advantage - Many people in the TV/ video world use it. Can do quite a lot of things.
Disadvantage - Costs the most money. Not everybody gets along with the interface.

My advantages and disadvantages are just my personal opinions. Your best bet to try the ones you think you might like and can afford. Another good thing to do would be to download a demo of them, that way you can find one which you think will work for you.

With out listing your system specs, how much money you are willing to spend, and what you plan to edit. I don't think we can really advise further.

Hope this helps,

Ed
