AVI to VHS via gl2

I loaded a 688meg AVI movie in to Premiere 6.5.
I then wanted to export the timeline to my GL2, to convert to analog, then to VHS
tape.
Premiere took over 7 hours to make a preview file , but , then hung and said I was out of hard drive space. I have a 60 gig HD, and xp/ntfs. I had over 20 gig free on scratch drive?
Is something wrong?
Is there abetter way to do this?
Thank you for any help.
Tom

Well, it might try to save the file somewhere else. Or worse, do
it uncompressed.

Personally I'd export a DV AVI file first, start a new project,
load the file and then export the timeline.
