Shooting and Editing for Broadcast

Hi all:
I use an XL1 with pinnacle DV500 (Premier 6.5) and have a very powerful PC with lots of RAM and fast HD space. I have good audio (wireless and shotgun).

I'm from a linear editing background and want to shoot and edit on my PC for on-line finished product for local broadcast...my questions are:

Do you recommend ony books or literature targeted toward the specific realm of shooting mini dv and on-line editing in Premier for broadcast?

What are your recommendations for preparing outputs for on-line standards?

On my XL1, should I even bother with the non-SMPTE color bars?

Are software versions of waveform and vectorscope as good as the real thing?

Should I bother shooting in 16:9 on the XL1 for tv broadcast?

Any other suggestions or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in Advance!
Bill

I think I can help with two of your questions-
1) Don't shoot in 16:9, as you will just end up losing resolution. Shoot 4:3, but frame for 16:9, and trim it in post.

2) Software tools like vectorscope and light wave are better than none at all. Depending on the software you have, it may be as good as the real thing.

I would definitely not trust the non-SMPTE bars....
