New! Nikon D5 and D500!
Nikon has gotten in the 4K video game introducing the new FX D5 and it's little brother the DX D500 (the long awaited successor to the D300).
CES 2016: Live from the Nikon press conference: Digital Photography Review Looking forward to seeing how these do for video. I wouldn't mind picking up the D500. The D5 has ISO up to 3,000,000 which is pretty incredible. Not sure how usable. Base ISO is up to 100,000. http://www.nikonusa.com/en/nikon-pro...:d5:010516:wwa http://www.nikonusa.com/en/nikon-pro...500:010516:wwa Last edited by Kyle Root; January 5th, 2016 at 02:34 PM. I love that these will take the same XQD cards as my FS7. I'll definitely be adding a D500 to my kit later this year. (Alongside my D810.)

I got excited until I saw it could only record cropped (1.6) 4k for 3 minutes. and is $6500.
Kyle, one article noted the claim the iso would be clean up to 12,800, which would still be wonderful to use. |

Regardless of how long it can record, I think that recording to external recorder will be necessary since the movie format is H-264 to obtain best picture.

Re: New! Nikon D5 and D500!
Some initial conflicting reports on the 4K video. I'm seeing some say it breaks the 4K video into 3 minute chunks because of FAT32, but actually records the usual 29:59 minutes.
Will have to do more research. If there's one thing I've learned, it's wait until December to buy camera gear because that's when all the good deals come out. I just got a refurb D7200 for $899 to go with my D750 and am really loving this new combo. |

They're going to be interesting players for sure. Most interesting will be where the usable line is on those ISO numbers
For video though, mirrorless systems with their EVFs still hold a lot of advantage over DSLRs, which area after all, photo cameras |

Re: New! Nikon D5 and D500!
There was a Nikon event at Hunt's Photo & Video in Massachusetts and I decided to attend. I didn't bother to get any shots of the presentation but I did get some quick shots of the cameras. The cameras were fully functional but they didn't want anyone to put a memory card in them to prevent people from putting it online since these aren't production units.

I just picked up a D500. I'll post some video in the coming week if I get a chance.
