My understanding is that while you cannot pause during recording, you can join clips in camera.
In other words, if you stop and start shooting 7 times this will unavoidably lead to the creation of 7 separate clips - however these clips can be converted into one clip easily and without any quality loss. I don't have the manual handy right now but it's all explained within.
