GoPro 3 BacPac Question

Just seeking clarification from anyone who bought the BacPac for the Hero 3. I have the Hero 2 BacPac and what I like more than anything about it is that you can charge another battery with it and than take the battery out the BacPac and use it directly in the camera. You can see this in the pics for the 2 here:

Hero 2 BacPac : GoPro Battery BacPac - Extend Battery Life & Easy Recharge

On the page for the 3 it doesn't show or mention this:

Hero 3 BacPac : Battery BacPac?| Attach it to double your GoPro camera?s battery life

Needing to know if the one for the 3 actually does open or is it just one piece only to be used piggybacked on the camera? Hoping that it works the same as the previous.

- Ray

Re: GoPro 3 BacPac Question

If anyone has the new bacpac, please answer, I'm interested too.

But if you just need to charge a GoPro battery, have you seen these?

But I hypothesize (don't know for sure), that you could get a dual charger for $40 like I asked in this thread.

I own neither a HD3 nor a BacPac but I can confirm that this is indeed the difference. The older Battery BacPac uses the same battery as HD1 and HD2 cameras, while the new Battery BacPac has a built-in battery with no possibility to take it out and use it elsewhere. BTW, here you find the manual of the new Battery BacPac.

I have the Pearstone for a different battery system, and cannot recommend it. It's poor quality.... many times after leaving batteries to charge all night, I find in the morning it has not charged at all. This seems to happen pretty regularly if connected to a powerstrip as opposed to directly in a wall outlet, but when traveling sometimes that's not an option. Sometimes it only charges a battery about halfway and stops. I'd avoid this for better quality products.

Re: GoPro 3 BacPac Question

Derek I'd suggest contacting Pearstone I've found their customer support to be very good.

We purchased a couple batteries for our HVX cameras & they weren't physically mounting into the camera nicely. Pearstone was quick & got us replacement batteries that worked better.

So far I've only used the charger with Canon LP-E6 batteries, but I just got a battery plate for Go Pro batteries & I will give them a shot.

To me I like the versatility of replaceable battery plates on a single / double charger. I find it is easier to swap out the plates than it is to swap out a new charger.

Re: GoPro 3 BacPac Question

Hi, Zach
I bought the system to charge OEM Canon batteries for my C300.... and found that repeatedly they would not charge when the charger was plugged into a powerstrip. Sometimes they wouldn't charge when plugged directly into the wall outlet, either.... but the bottom line was I couldn't rely on the charger to fully charge my batteries overnight while on a shoot. A pretty significant issue while on the road. I did like the idea of the interchangeable trays (I use other battery types for other cameras and wireless systems) but was so disappointed in the performance that I just shelved it. I haven't tried contacting Pearstone directly, so maybe to be fair I should give that a try.....
