UK TV show using GoPros.
Has anybody noticed that Watchdog, the UK consumers' terrier, is using a lot of GoPros in their filmed confrontations with 'Rogue Traders'. They are on suction pads inside and out of vehicles and clamped to the top of main cameras as well on poles lifted high above the action. It's a good game of spot the GoPro when the programme is on.

Re: UK TV show using GoPros.
Hi George
We have quite a few teen/ young adult shows here as well as sporting programs and there are often a GoPro strapped to the talent or mounted somewhere. They seem to be used more and more in any show with a bit of action in it!! Chris |

Chris the interesting positioning is atop the main camera angled down so that when a confronted miscreant puts his hand over the lens to hide his face the whole thing is captured from above, not realising that the little odd looking thing is recording in glorious HD for all to see.

On the USA show called "Cheaters" I see them using a GoPro above the video light on the shoulder mount camera..you can see where the cheating husband/wife puts his hand over the camera's lens hood but the GoPro records everything that is going on... makes them even more guilty cos they don't want themselves recorded!!

Go-Pros are used extensively on the BBC for all sorts of applications. They often appear on 'The One Show', an early evening prime time Monday to Friday chat/topical programme. I've seen them on canoes. charity rickshaws, nature articles, - even in the studio where they can't easily get their standard handheld kit (Canon XF305) out of the main camera view.

I don't get it. The BBC have a list of certified cameras how does the GoPro fit in to this?

You can use a non-certified camera for portions of a show.. Especially if there is no other camera available for such a role..

Yes, the BBC allows the use of other non-approved cameras within an HD production, - I think its up to 10%.
This 10% can include upscaled SD as well as HD devices that don't provide source footage that is compatible with the corporation's workflow. |
