GoPro Roll Bar Mounting on Formula Ford 2000(Continental)
Does anybody know if the GoPro Roll Bar mount or the Eye of Mine roll bar mount will work on a Van Diemen Formula Ford 2000. This car has the twin roll bars that meet at the top. I have attached a photo of this car. I would like to affix to the top of the joined bars. I have to attempt this at the track with little time to find out if either of these 2 mounts will work.

Depends what size the bar on that car is.
GoPro's Handlebar Seatpost Mount (Handlebar and Seat Post Bicycle Camera Mount - GoPro Ride HERO) fits .75" to 1.4" bars. Their Roll Bar Mount (Roll Bar Mount for GoPro HERO Cameras) fits 1.4" to 2.5" bars. Eye of Mines' mount looks like it only fits 2" bars, give or take a 1/4 inch or so. |

Regardless of whether it will fit or not, I think I would be more inclined to go with a custom fabricated mount a little sturdier than the plastic assembly that either option provides. While they are quite solid and secure, I don't know that I'd want to risk them on a full on race car. If anything, I would be inclined to go to a RAM mount system, thread lock, etc. and anchor it down well. A custom mount would be easy to do, regardless

Thanks Matt and Wayne. I will look into some more options for mounting.

Re: GoPro Roll Bar Mounting on Formula Ford 2000(Continental)
The biggest issue using Gopros on race car roll bars are the vibrations. One member of our GoPro Forum did a few laps in a similar car and mount position and the GoPro was severely worn and marked where it makes contact with the inside of the housing. He even had rubber isolating the roll bar from the roll bar mount. The high frequency vibrations transmitted thru the mount made the video wavy (due to jello distortion) and eventually he settled on a front wing tip mounting position similar to this F1 car of Jenson Button http://www.dvinfo.net/forum/new-micr...e-awesome.html

Ian,
Any idea of what kind of mount or where you can get one that can mount to a formula car wing? I have tried the roll bar mounting position on another car and yes the jello can be really bad. I'm going to stick the R4 resolution setting to hopefully minimize the jello effect so it's not on full HD jello beauty. John |

Re: GoPro Roll Bar Mounting on Formula Ford 2000(Continental)
You really should use R3 if you want reduced jello (assuming you have the 1080 HD GoPro not 960 model) but Button used R5 and so did i in my copycat tests on the intake vent of my bumper bar.
On the wing, you could use one of the 3M stick on mounts, but the best result will be with no housing and mounted close to the where the wing joins the nose (less flex/vibes) but of course it's then unprotected. This is what Button did and the jello in the F1 loop at Bathurst was acceptable for broadcast. I used cable ties and electrical tape on my tests without housing. The issue with the housing is the case mounting prongs flex. R |
