problem with sony d300 and XL1

Shoot SP on a canon XL 1. Take the tape to a sony gv-d300 deck. Jumping and skippy audio and picture follows. Not just here and there but throughout the whole tape. I have then inserted older XL1 tapes shot on the same camera and some tapes with a GL1 - no problems! Is there a setting I could have accidentally put on the XL1? (it's not on LP) Dirty heads? Funny thing, is that the current tapes play back fine on the XL1 but who wants to use that when I just purchased a several hundred dollar deck? Thanks!
