Ideally you'd have a separate drive for OS, a separate drive for application and a separate drive for data.
Keep the OS drive small and keep making ghost backups of the OS drive. This way if the OS drive dies (which often is the one that goes) you can easily restore it to a new drive using ghost within minutes
