Using Cam to Capture

This is kind of a what if question. I just got a PD170 and currently don't have the money for a DVCAM deck. If I really really needed one, I could get one in the future, but with HD probably in the future I'm assuiming it would be a mistake to get an SD deck.

How much wear and tear occurs when using the camera to capture and rewind? Anybody had bad problems with this?

PS. I have another old old dv cam, but I am reluctant to use it because of its age and it has had many tape brands run through it over the years.
