8mm tape

Hi.
I searched the forums and couldn't find anything.
What is the difference between regular 8mm video tape and the 8mm metal tape? It's the same price. three for $9.00 or so.
Does it matter if I am coverting to digital?

Also, anyway to improve the sound capture using a Sony Handycam 8XR, CCD-TR517? It can take an external mic, I went to radio shack, the guy there had no clue, and all the mics had jacks that would not fit.
Thanks.

All 8mm video tapes have metal recording layers. Can you describe or name the type of mike input that didn't match mikes at Radio Shack?
