Noise on the 700 / 790 still there? at DVinfo.net

I posted back in August 2009 about my test with a loaner camera... thread here:

I was concerned about the noise, as were others. I understand there have been a few firmware updates and the 790 is out... any better on this issue as I still want to love this camera... in fact we never bought ANY HD camera - and limped along with our DigiBeat - but now its got a dead pixel AND we need a new computer - so this could finally be the time to upgrade.

Also is it true there is better CAC with the 790 or on a certain new lens?

The CAC is a panasonic-function, JVC don't speak from CAC in their Cams.

At the end of that long thread everyone came to an agreement that if you shoot in the cameras native 720 format there's no noise. The noise is only there in the 1080 format. I've used the 700 extensively and haven't seen any noise in the blacks and that's one area that I'm picky about. However, I shoot all of my footage in 720/60p.

I recommend this: if you buy the JVC, shoot in 720p. If you need/want 1080i, buy a camera with a native 1080i chipset. I know that there are times when a client will insist on a 1080i format and if you have clients like that then this camera might not be your best option. But if you can control your workflow then this camera can be excellent. The clients I've worked with haven't been picky about 720/1080, they just want to make sure it's HD. Access your clients needs and determine if you can shoot a 720 workflow. If so, then the 700/790 may be the right camera for you.

Just had my first test shoot on the 700 which I got a few weeks back. I shot in 1080 25p and to be brutally honest I was not at all impressed. I am hoping it is down to user error, however I have followed much of the advice on here and set up scene/pic files as per recommendations. The noise is unbelievable, even at decent light levels. I am so disappointed at shelling out for an upgrade from the Sony Z1. I hope that it is down to my inadequacies rather than those of the the camera/lens.
I will try and shoot at 720 but it seems strange to shoot at that setting, when I had heard how great the offset pixel technology was.
The firmware upgrade, from the research I have done, seems to have had little or no affect in terms of noise reduction, and also the difference in picture quality between it with DNR on/off was negligible, if at all noticeable.

My initial post was 1 years ago!!!! sad to say it, but I have long since moved on... too bad i really wanted to love this camera...
