Well it looks like MP4 will be available in October 2009 per the JVC site. When I went to the page for my camera (GY-HM700U), I found this quote:
"MP4 file format Available with or without the optional SxS Media Recorder (eff. Oct. 09)" See the whole page here: JVC Professional Features page Lets hope this is one of many things that will be included in the firmware update. (Providing the upgrade for MP4 is made via firmware) I found this also on the "More Details" Page: "Optional SxS Media Recorder By attaching the optional SxS media recorder, the GY-HM700 will record in the .MP4 format used by Sony's XDCAM EX™ onto high speed SxS memory cards. This compact recorder attaches directly to the GY-HM700 without an adapter, essentially becoming part of the camera. Simultaneous recording to SDHC and SxS memory is also possible, providing instant backup or archival recordings. The compact media recorder provides status information on its built-in LCD screen as well as on the camera's viewfinder. Recorded video on the SxS cards can be played back on the camera's LCD monitor or viewfinder. .MP4 files can be recorded to SDHC cards without the Optional SxS Media Recorder when the latest firmware is installed in the camera. (As of 9/18/2009)" Steve, Bethlehem, Pa. |

Steve...wow, that was fast!
I just added the new firmware link to the product page and have updated the support download page at JVC PROFESSIONAL PRODUCTS COMPANY The new firmware gives existing owners of the GY-HM700 all of the updates that were announced at IBC with the "A" version. The model number is not changing, but updated cameras have an "A" sticker next to the model number to denote the update. Basically, the firmware adds the ability to record .MP4 to SDHC cards without using the SxS adapter. It also provides improved DNR performance and Class 10 support. All but a very few early GY-HM700's are eligible for the firmware update. Those early units will need to be updated by a JVC service technician. The website should identify those units and prevent the download. A formal U.S. announcement will be made next week regarding the upgrade. Dave Walton Asst. V.P. Marketing Communications JVC U.S.A. |

Hi Dave,
Although I was able to download the update, I could not get it to go. I get flashing lights and no progress. I also get an error log on the card. "Error : Battery **/**/**/**:** update start ! Error : size Error : UPD file_header ????? UPDATE FAILER ! ????? Error : FILE HEADER" I followed the PDF instruction to a T. No battery, right off the AB power supply unit. Any Ideas? One thing I noticed is the file size is only 16kb??? rather small for a update. update 201 was 11,387kb. I'm thinking this might be the problem. Steve |

Steve,
The GY-HM700.UPD file (contained within the zip download) should be 11,377KB --almost the same size as the previous version. The compressed ZIP file is 4094KB. I have confirmed that the file that is posted on the server is a mostly empty zip file. I have the correct file, but may not be available to post it until Monday morning. If you need it sooner, send me a private e-mail with your e-mail address. Dave Walton JVC Last edited by David Walton; September 18th, 2009 at 09:48 PM. |

Split the update?
[QUOTE=David Walton;1370521]Steve...wow, that was fast!

The website should identify those units and prevent the download. Hi Dave, I'm one of those few that has a unit, that have to go to JVC for an update. Would it be an idea for JVC to split the update package into two, so that we could choose to ONLY have the MPEG4 functionality and skip the other updates. That way I could send the camera in for the full update when there's a quiet period - and still get the much needed MPEG4 functionality (my guess is that there's no need to send in the cam for getting this??). |

HI Guys
I need some explication, I did the update and MP4 format for Edius user like me it's great ! I don't understand this part ( what is SSE ? ) Ok I don't see any black spleet screen, How can I check to be sure than I dont have it? "Important notice: When updating from SPL1030-V1-05 to this version, the BLACK level may change and SSE may appear. If the SSE appeared after updated to SPL1030-V1-06 or later, confirm the Black adjustment. Note: 10 minutes warming up of the camera is essential before checking the SSE." Thanks a lot Mike Last edited by Mike Laisney; September 20th, 2009 at 04:12 AM. |

Those notes apply only to very early firmware versions not supported by this upgrade. This is the reason we check your firmware prior to the upgrade. The message can be ignored.

I've installed the firmwareupgrade, it all works. The MP4 is good for PC-users and when I shot for customers editing on windows-PC-stations.
The better DNR eg. Noise-Reduction couldn't be seen now. |
