New Hangout & NAB Invitation

Well, it looks like Jared Land has elected to serve only those filmmakers using Panasonic products and the Red line which has yet to make an appearance. This of course is his perrogative but I'm sorry he's elected to go this route. Independent filmmakers need a home where they can go to discuss issues and find help and that's what Jared provided which is precisely why people like me invested the time we did on his site. We enjoy imparting our knowledge and meeting others in the industry. I guess everything happens for a reason.

As I make the logical move over to DVi, I must first say that I hope the people who called DVX home will make the move also. We've found a way to do alot of good in the JVC community of users and I'm pleased to have been able to have provided a little of that help. And I'm sure others like Stephen in Chicago feel the same way.

We have a gathering planned at put names with faces NAB this year and with the JVC area having been dropped from the DVX site without notice, all of those people, 23 at last count, who were waiting to hear where the gathering would be now have no way of finding out.

So, let me make my first regular posting here an invitation for all of those who care to to join us at NAB for a small gathering. I have the e-mail addresses of about 11 of the former DVX / JVC owners/shooters and they're coming over and we'd be pleased to see all of those filmmakers with whom we've conversed over the last year. It's an opportunity to share good food and dring and conversation while at NAB.

Instead of flying in, I'll be driving our newest motor coach in and staying at the Circus Circus KOA Luxury Motor Coach facility which is located right behind the Circus-Circus Hotel and Casino on the strip. I've never been there but the only other three luxury motor coach facilities are not just 2-blocks from the Convention Center like this one is so Circus-Circus it is.

The address is 500 Circus Circus Dr., Las Vegas 89109, (702)733-9707 or (800) 562-7270 but again it's actually on the strip at Riviera Drive and if you walk up Riviera 2 blocks you'll hit the Convention Center.

I won't have a space number until I arrive this Friday afternoon at which time I'll post that space number here. For now, though, know that it's planned for 6:00pm Monday April 24 and anyone and everyone's invited, JVC-owners or not.

There'll be plenty to eat and drink from Royal Crown cola to Crown Royal liquor and from Champagne to Chartreuse together with all kinds of food. You can fit about 15-18 in our big coach and another 50 outside and if it does get bigger than that, I have the pool area, cabanas and game room available so whether there's 5 or 500, we should have it covered.

The idea is to get together to put some faces with the names we've been using all year and to share our stories about filmmaking, television production and the JVC camera. If he's back from London, George Dibbie will be there and with 8 Emmy awards and 11 nominations, you could spend the entire night just listening to him.

Also, we'll have the rough cuts of "2nd Unit" playing on the plasma in the main salon area of the coach so you can all see what we we were up to on location in Tunica this last week with the show and Ed Hill and Warren Schultz.

It should be alot of fun and I hope you all can make it. Please PM me so we can get a rough estimate of those who are planning to attend and we'll see you there. Any other questions, call me at 661-305-9564 and lastly, I'll post the Space Number here on Friday as soon as I have it. It should be a great time and I'm happy to welcome you all.

Jonathan

PS. One thing I will miss is no spell check. I'm the world's worst typist!

no other camera's at dvxuser

I must admit Jonathon, I was greatly disappointed this morning to check one of three sites I visit for my daily fix, thats dvinfo, hdforindies and dvxuser, to find no longer the other camera section, do you think or know whether this is a deliberate action to leave out sony and jvc, or is it Jareds just reconfiguring the site, and is yet to put the other camera section back in.

If its gone, it would be a tragedy for the reasons you've already stated

Hello Jonathan,

Welcome to DVINFO and those other HD100 users who plan to join you here. I want to encourage you and the others to read up on our posting policies because we run a pretty tight ship with regards to how others are treated.

No flaming, ranting, personal attacks, platform wars, political, religious discussions because they tend to polarize and degrade into personal attacks at some point. DVINFO is what it says in the name of the forum. A place to gather and discuss creating digital video and the associated issues that surround the process.

Just look at the threads and you'll get the picture. You will find this to be one of the most congenial sites on the internet because we keep it that way, all day, every day.

Sounds like quite the party you have planned there!

Best of luck and welcome again,

Greg Boston

*Hey everyone.. I made the choice to go back to our roots.. nothing against any other companies... It was just hard for anyone to post anything other then their own respective forum, and it started to get ugly when people went exploring. Im bringing back DVXuser to the cameras i feel best suit our audience. It is in our name.

That is why I am directing people here, DVinfo has always been a great place for EVERYONE, always has, and probably always will be. Sorry to upset some people, It was a very hard decision.

Jarred, thanks for the post, I understand your position and I'm sure it was a hard decision.

In the future (for all forum moderators) can I just suggest a notice is posted with a few days notice so some of us can go through and grab any information we find useful before it's sent to the forums graveyard, perhaps locking the threads for read only?

Just my friendly advice :)

Nothing wrong with that decision, Jarred. But I am surprised there wouldn't have been any advance warning. I don't personally know that there wasn't, just getting that vibe from the postings above.

Just to follow up behind Jarred, I'd like to point out one of our many unreasonable and completely pointless (yet firmly enforced) rules: no dissing other sites please, or other site owners for that matter. That's not what we're here for. If you want to discuss the technical aspects of the gear and their creative applications, then you're warmly welcomed here.

Well Adam, I can say is, as you know we were on location all week in Tunica MS and I jumped on a plane there at 7 this morning to get back here for Easter. In the time that I was in the air to right now, I've had 47, yes 47 e-mails from people at DVxUser who were afraid they couldn't get to me and others through DVxUser like Stephen now that it's been closed to JVC and others. And everyone, I mean everyone is expressing outrage at what's happpened. Many of them are questioning Jared's motivation and some don't care about his motivation but rather his lack of sensitivity in not "giving notice" and that's verbatim; "giving notice" so people could get their affairs together and have time to move elsewhere.

As for me, I have to say that I give Jared credit for doing something that's very difficult; running a Board and if he did, as many suspect, "sell out" to Panasonic and believe me I have no way of knowing if he did or not, I have to say, bully for him. But in knowing Jared as well or as little as I do, remember, I've only been here for about 6-moths (seems like longer, huh?) I have to say that "selling out" is just not his style. This guy puts in countless hours every day and it's one thing for us who work in the industry to come to a Board daily, give our 2 cents with either questions, comments or help and then head back to our jobs but the people that I know that run Boards like this, including Jared, well, let's just say money isn't their motivating factor. He cares. I care. That's why we're producing 2nd Unit. That's why we're still going to promote HVXBootcamp. That's why we're throwing the parties at NAB and that's way we should embrace Jared's decision no natter the reasoning and use the oppportunity we have here with DVInfo to continue the work we started over there. There's no reason they can't be sister organizations...or brother organizations I should say.

As to why the no-notice, I don't know. That certainly would have been the right thing to do but there has to be a reason. People who do what Jared and the dozens of others who run these Boards do who don't do it for the money but to help their fellow man don't do hurtful things on purpose. I guess what I'm trying to say is yeah, it sucks not being at DVXuser because it was so comfortable. But this is another place that can be just as good and better. I've already sent a couple of e-mails to Jared and had a pair of responses. Let's see if we can continue what Jared and I planned and have people head over to the motor coach and pool facilities at 6 and then over to Jared's bash right after. They're only a couple of blocks away from eachother.

And thanks for the PM and e-mail and phone call responses I got wondering where I was going. I hope to see everyone at our parties.

Wow

Wow, in the time it took me to answer Adams one post, 6 others came in on Adam's issue. Well, thankfully, all I can say is I told you so. Guys like Jared don't dump things they've built to help people just to hurt them. These people put in, again, countless hours doing this and it's a great service for the independent filmmaker. So, let's take Monday's party at the motor coach and Circus-Circus and make it a new start for JVC at DVInfo.net and then head over to DVXuser's party. I know 47...no 48 people who are going to be here alot more and seeing Stephen and Tim already here, it'll be a great forum so it should be a great pair of parties!!!.

Greg's Message

Thanks, Greg. What I can say about the JVC area of Jared's board was that, at least in the last 6-months I've been there, people have always conducted themselves with the utmost of decorum. There were no flames to speak of and nothing got out of hand. As a matter of fact, I had two shooters from DVxuser join me in Tunica, MS for a production last week so it's a failry tight family.

I know the no notice was a crappy thing to do to you guys, and I am sorry that it had to go that way. I decided if I did give warning, it might turn into a negative storm and people's anger might be contagious.

You guys can still get to the old posts if you need info here:

http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/forumdisplay.php?f=67&s=

Again.. sorry for cutting you guys out, but as you know Chris will take very good care of you.

Jonathan,

Welcome to DV Info. I have been a poster/reader of both forums. The JVC forum at DVX was like a family as you described, but the forum here is full of working professionals that I think you will find, provide a useful place for the exchange of ideas, questions and tech info. You will find users such as Nate, Tim and Stephen here just like they were on DVX.

Chris Hurd has a high level of standards on this site and this has helped to keep DV Info a great place to learn as well as share with others.

I look forward to the quality of your posts here after reading you on DVX.

Just for the record Jonathan, I wasn't of the belief that you would engage in such behavior. But, the popularity of this site has led to an influx of 'undesirables' that have already had to go find a new home. I have no doubt that your bunch of JVC shooters will add tremendous knowledge and information to DVINFO.

p.s. Tunica? You could have easily run into my mom and dad. They live in central Arkansas but visit Tunica very frequently.
