If one goes west, it is usually into the ocean so I guess the connotation of "going west" means lost or broken as if it went into the ocean or went missing over the ocean. In Texas I believe you have the ocean to your south.
There was a story about a racehorse here which had some sort of a crazy impulse when it was being trained on a nearby beach to build strength. It went in the water and headed for Africa. It was some distance out before folk managed to get a boat out and turn it around.
