Sounds like you need to rent a camera, or a deck.

I think the early generation single ccd JVC HD10? Consumerish cam available on Ebay can do it.

Capturing JVC HDV if camera is no longer available.

The JVC HD10 can capture JVC HDV1 720p 30p - not 24p or 60p footage.
I don't rent my gear out without me, but what I've done for local people with capture needs is capture their tapes for an hourly fee - either to a FCP project or to m2t files, using their firewire drives.

You might see if you can make a similar arrangement locally, for most situations it's a win/win over straight equipment rental. No security, damage, timing issues with equipment, and you also avoid what can be a tricky configuration on your system for those who haven't done it before.

Update

so, im racking my brain and bank account to get a playback deck. i bought the hd extreme by blackmagic, which was wrong card, tried everything under the sun, to find out that "THE FIREWIRE PORT IS NOT BLOWN!!!!!! I just bought two of these cams off a guy on ebay who swore they were blown. i paid 3500 for both cams. My 10 year old son heard me screaming at the comp as I was up late searching online, came upsatairs and asked me was everything "ok" daddy? i told him why i was upset and in his innocent little voice he asked "did you try it?" ?????? wtf, so i took the lil boogers advice, popped in a firewire cable and low and behold she worked!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the moral of this story is.... aww s@#t, i dont know the moral, just that imma dumbass for not checking it. so now my son is working for me as my tech advisor!

That's fantastic news! Especially considering the deal you got on the cameras...
