My 720P downconverts look beautiful as well and I use the slightly modified "standard" 90 minute run time settings put forward in the Apple Certified Training book for DVDSP3 for the majority of my work.

No tricks. 720P seems to have MANY less issues with downconvert than any of the 1080 flavours.
